Nominations for the 2024-2025 cohort of the Black Legacy Fellowship are now CLOSED.

Nomination Eligibility

We welcome nominations from people who are:

  • American-born direct descendants of enslaved Africans.

  • At least 18 years old at the time of the application deadline.

  • Residents in the seven-county metro area of Twin Cities.

  • Individuals unaffiliated with the Cultural Wellness Center or the Pohlad Family Foundation. This includes employees, contractors, or family members of employees or contractors. Family members include spouse, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, child, grandchild, great-grandchild, and spouses of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Information for Nominators

  • Self-nominations will not be accepted.

  • Nominators can only nominate one person.

  • Nominators must agree to support the nominee through the process of selection, and if they are selected for participation in the fellowship.

Nomination Submission

Your nomination letter should acknowledge the work of the person being nominated by sharing the following information:

  1. A short description explaining why you are nominating this individual.

  2. A short description of the individual’s work towards racial justice in the Twin Cities.

  3. An example of the individuals work through the years and the impact you have observed or experienced in community.

  4. In your observation, has the individual you are nominating connected to a group of elders from the cultural community we seek to recognize in this Black Legacy Fellowship? (Provide a short description, names of individual Elders is not required.) 

  5. Describe how you will support the individual you are nominating if they are selected for this fellowship. 

Your nomination submission should be no more than two-pages in length.

Nomination & Selection Process

  • Nominations begin with the completion of the nomination form completed by a nominator(s).

  • Community reviewers will narrow the nomination pool to 60 nominees.

  • People who have been nominated for the Black Legacy Fellowship will be notified and provided with program details including key dates and fellowship expectations. Nominees will then:

    1. Decide whether or not they accept the nomination.

    2. If the nomination is accepted, a full application must be submitted.

  • Community reviewers will narrow applicants down to 20 finalists.

  • 20 finalists will be invited to in-person interviews for the final selection of 7 fellows.

  • 7 fellows will be selected and notified of fellowship award. Individuals not selected for the fellowship will also be notified at this time.

Key Dates

March 18, 2024: Nominations open

April 15, 2024: Nominations due at 11:59 PM

April 29, 2024: Selected nominees will be invited to apply

May 28, 2024: Nominees application deadline

June 11, 2024: Begin interviews for fellow finalists

June 24, 2024: Notification of the new fellows
