BLACK. LEGACY. RENEWED

About the Black Legacy Fellowship

The Black Legacy Fellowship (formerly known as the Black Leadership and Legacy Enrichment Initiative) is an investment in the renewal of Black activists and organizers who are committed to the sustainability of the racial justice movement in the Twin Cities. This fellowship provides support for Black activists and organizers who are descendants of enslaved Africans, and have experience on the frontlines of racial justice work in the Twin Cities.

Through this opportunity, we seek to recognize the dedication of individuals who have worked in the movement for a long time and individuals who are the future of the racial justice movement.

The Cultural Wellness Center and Pohlad Family Foundation co-created this fellowship for people who have not yet received awards or recognition for their work towards justice, nor have been afforded the time and opportunity to focus on their own wellbeing. The intention for this fellowship is to reach people who need renewed energy in order to continue their work towards racial justice.

Participation in the fellowship includes:

  • Financial support of $55,000 in unrestricted funds to support renewal.

  • Community Building Fund of $15,000 to award a nonprofit or community-based organization working towards the longevity of the racial justice movement in the Twin Cities.

  • Engagement in a cohort learning model about wellbeing and renewal including retreats and program activities that reinforce shared learning.

  • Cultural Self-Study curriculum delivered by the Cultural Wellness Center that can lead to Cultural Wellness.

  • A cultural wellness approach to connection to Black Elders, community, and each other, to support and grow renewal and wellness practices.
